Researching a variety of styles of painting

After going to the Tate Modern and looking at a variety of very modern and conceptual pieces, a very large amount being abstract, it was very interesting to then go to the National Portrait Gallery. To be able to so clearly see the variety of art side by side is so interesting as it teaches you the contrast and variety that is possible. It was also very useful as I was able to learn a variety of different things from both spaces. In the National Gallery there was a space in which there was a direct comparison between the work of Pablo Picasso and Dominique Ingres. Both of their works being paintings of woman but with an 100 year time difference making it a very interesting comparison especially looking at Picasso's completely abstract way of painting. They both give me an idea of portraiture through out time and how it has and will shift within the styles of painting. When at the Tate modern, many pieces were sculptural or photographic and any paintings seen were largely very conceptual, while National Gallery paintings focused on the technical skill of painting portraits and landscapes. This huge difference I find very interesting and both of these different ways of art hugely influence and help develop my own practice.
